Under current treatment methods, about 45% of cancer patients can be cured, and the cure rate of radiotherapy is 18%, second only to surgical treatment.

In recent years, with the rapid development of computer technology, medical imaging technology, image processing technology, and the continuous update of radiotherapy equipment, radiotherapy technology has moved towards high precision, from two-dimensional ordinary radiotherapy to four-dimensional image-guided conformal intensity-modulated radiation treatment. At present, under the control of a computer, high-dose radiation can be tightly wrapped around the tumor tissue, while the surrounding normal tissues can be adjusted to the lowest dose. In this way, the target area can be irradiated with a high dose, and the normal tissue can be damaged as little as possible.

Compared with other imaging equipment, MRI has multiple advantages. It has no radiation, is affordable, can form three-dimensional dynamic images, and has a very clear contrast to soft tissues. Moreover, MRI has not only morphology, but also function, which can form molecular images.

Radiotherapy under MRI can not only achieve more precise radiotherapy, reduce radiation dose, improve the success rate of radiotherapy, but also evaluate the effect of radiotherapy in real time. Therefore, the combination of MRI and radiotherapy is the current and future trend of radiotherapy.
